How odd it would be for me to be working in my lab with funds given to me from the Roman Catholic Church. But it apparently could (and does happen).

I would have never guessed that the Roman Catholic Church ever even considered sponsoring scientific research. But why not? Believe me, plenty of groups with overt agendas do so all the time.
