After seeing your post I looked up that speech and read it. I disagree with him on Vietnam and the military, however I loved everything else he had to say. Back in our Northwest days I read the Gulag Archipelago and highly recommend that book (if you have not already read it). As much as we hate it, there is nothing like suffering when it comes to development of spirit. I also recommend a book called Disputed Questions by Thomas Merton where he talks about Boris Leonidovich Pasternak, where Merton highlights some of the deep spiritual insights which Pasternak gleaned from his Soviet experiences.
