From what I have been told prostrations (great and small) have died out in many parishes due to pews. A mature, ethnicly Greek friend who is a member of my OCA parish said that great prostrations were never made in the Greek churches she attended. She'd never seen them until she came to our parish. They only made metanias.
I have visited an Orthodox cathedral with pews and I have to say I didn't like it all. The service was beautiful but we were instructed to sit for most of it. It is harder to respond to worship when sitting. I felt like a spectator.
