Who are these guys???



The captions just say "Russian Orthodox Protestors." In the second pic above, the man is said to be "showing his group's emblem" on his shirt. A very cool looking shirt (Anyone read it? I want one!)...anyway they sorta look like a Russian Biker Gang. I think Dan Brown should sit down and have a chat with them - perhaps over tea.

The shirt says "Orthdoxy or Death" in bigger letters, in Russian on top and Greek on the bottom.

Well, I guess there's no better way to convince people that there's no conspiracy than freaking out, damning the film and forbidding that people see it!?

James, did you see the poll that the Telegraph did? I'll see if I can find you a link, but 23% believed that Jesus had a child with Mary! And that's not even just Americans! ;-)

Yes Graham, I saw the poll...blogged about it.

I'm not one to call for bans, though I would encourage people not to see it. Clearly people believe that Dan Brown is educating them.

Hence, if through that bullhorn the Orthodox bikers are shouting things like "The Vote at Nicea in 325 wasn't even close!" then they are my heros.

I definately want one of those shirts.

. But I do know that at one time Fr. Gregory Mathewes-Green had a shirt which read "Have a Nicene Day."

Actually, there are some rather dramatic Nationalistic elements in Russia that have Nazi-like attitudes about Orthodox Christianity and the Russian People. It wouldn't surprise me if this group were attached to that sort of thing. I mean, the Russian Orthodox Nazis have to participate in something or another, don't they? And an "Orthodoxy or Death" t-shirt would be the exact sort of thing you'd expect to see.

Well the hats they are wearing (though perhaps there is a Russian equivilent) are called Shajkatcha in Serbian and are the traditional Serbian military hats, and as such were one of the symbols of the "Chetnik" Royalist resistance fighters who fought the communists and the Nazis during WWII.
An "Orthodoxy or Death" t-shirt would be pretty cool...

The "Punks to Monks" movement (where the American shirts in question came from) was started by Fr. Seraphim Rose and kin at Platina Monastery in Northern California. They have a few stores; I frequent one called Not of This World in Santa Rosa, where they hold a weekly "Catacomb Cafe." They cater to street kids, mostly, and they get an INTERESTING mix of about 30 people each week. They are one of the most innovative outreach programs I have seen in a long time...they support an academy in Alaska called St. Michael's, and are affiliated with the attempts at monastic revival at Spruce Island (causing them to produce an awesome bumper sticker that says, "Monks rock;" if I had a car, I would get it!). But yeah...that's where you find those type of shirts in America...
